Last night Jeff Teper announced a SP2 issue where a product expiration date was improperly set. After installation the licensing may be set to Evaluation which will cause the farm to stop working after 180 days. MS is working on a hotfix, but in the mean time your farms are fine. Even if you fail to install the forthcoming hotfix your farm will not be accessible to users but your data is safe and secure until the patch is applied.
Soon there will be a KB article (971620) that will explain a manual fix. Expect the KB article in the next day or two.

Please join us for the first meeting of the Central Illinois SharePoint User Group.
The Central Illinois SharePoint User Group provides a venue for anyone who is interested in learning more about Windows SharePoint Services and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server. We hope to provide a means for organizations within the Central Illinois region to connect and discuss all areas of SharePoint with the help of some great speakers. If you are thinking about SharePoint, starting with SharePoint or have a long history of using SharePoint we hope you will spend the morning with the group and help spread the knowledge.
Topic: Do you Know SharePoint?
Whether you've spent two minutes or two years with SharePoint you'll get tons of little quirks, tricks, and features you never knew existed out of this presentation. We'll take a journey around the product and point out some of the lesser known features. Did you know you can get your users to enter metadata -- without knowing it?

Windows 7 Release Candidate is available for download today. It looks like you will only be able to download from TechNet or MSDN until May 5. I read somewhere that you would need to do a clean install from a Beta version of Windows 7. I will probably spend the weekend backing up my Dell, wiping it clean and installing Windows 7.

Here are the links to SP2 for WSS 3 and MOSS. Remember to install the WSS SP2 on MOSS before you install MOSS SP2. Lots of fixes and updates to get us closer to SharePoint 2010. MOSS 2007 SP2 contains updates to MOSS, Groove Server, Excel Services, Forms Server, Project Server and Search Server. Make sure you grab the correct platform version -x86 or x64.

Sure we all knew the next version of SharePoint is under development but today Microsoft has released an official Press Release refering to the next version of SharePoint as SharePoint Server 2010. Yep the name Microsoft Office is not offically part of the name but I would not read much into that. Read the press release at http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/features/2009/Apr09/04-15Office2010.mspx

This week I am up in Montreal Canada speaking at SharePoint Summit. Spent the day working on slides and demos. The conference selected a Feature and Solution talk but I ended up with one of the 45 minute slots. Ouch, you cannot do Features and Solutions in 45 minutes. Thanks everyone who stayed on into the break to let me deploy the solution. Slides are available here: SPTechCon Features and Solutions
So far I have not had time to sit in on a full session but I have managed to meet up with Serge Tremblay, Reza Alirezaei, Eli Robillard, Bill English and Matt Passannante. Also met up with Mike Fitzmaurice who was on hand as a vendor (Nintex) and a speaker.

Every now and then I get an itch to do something different. These days I scratch that itch with microcontrollers and embedded programming. Working with micros are a nice change of pace after spending all day working with SharePoint and .NET (though I love to work with MOSS). Most of the playtime is spent using the C or Assembly language . Micro programming is a world of ports and registers, hex and binary - a place that most .NET developers never see.
Half of the fun is working with digital electronics, capacitors, diodes, resistors, integrated circuits, breadboards and wires. There is a certain amount of satisfaction when you create your own 5 volt power regulator and it actually puts out a clean 5V signal. Right now I am working with the ATMega168 controller which retails for about $4. Toss in a the 5V power regulator and about $5 in capacitors, resistors and an 16mhz oscillator you have pretty nice little microcontroller set up.
Last night I was working with the ATMega168 controller and the Bare-Bones Board Kit from Modern Device Company. For a few dollars you get all these parts…..

and with some solder and heat you end up with….

Trust me, it is a great feeling to actually start from the pieces, spend an hour soldering and find out that it actually works when it is finished. Great little diversion and one more thing to code.

I started day 3 delivering my session on PowerShell and SharePoint. One of the first demos failed but we - the attendees and I recovered nicely. Seems that most in the audience has had little exposure with PowerShell but they were eager non-the-less. We spent the session working with PowerShell and SharePoint using both the object model and STSADM. The session actually went over by 15 minutes when one of the conference organizer stopped by to mention that it was time for a break. Not one person mentioned that we were going over or got up to leave. I don’t think I have had such an attentive group of attendees. This was my final presentation for the conference.
I spent the day catching up with work and emails but did manage to attend Todd Klindt and Shane Young's Better with SQL Server 2008 and Server 2008 - For Todd's Benefit Windows Server 2008 :) but that is an inside joke.
That was it for me for SPTechCon. The next SPTechCon is scheduled in Boston, June 22-24 2008. Check out SPTechCon for more info.
